Bhakti Charu Swami History
Bhakti Charu Swami holds a prominent position within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) as both a member of the GBC (Governing Body Commission) and an initiating guru. Originating from a respected Bengali family, he spent his early years in the bustling city of Kolkata. While studying in Germany, he encountered the profound teachings of the Vedic scriptures, which ignited his curiosity to explore and comprehend the realm of spirituality. After completing his education, he embarked on a quest to find a spiritual guide who could lead him on the right path. His search culminated when he stumbled upon the writings of Srila Prabhupada, particularly his book "The Nectar of Devotion." The more he delved into Prabhupada's teachings, the more convinced he became that Srila Prabhupada was the true mentor to steer him on his spiritual journey. Thus, Bhakti Charu Swami accepted Srila Prabhupada as his spiritual master.
In late 1976, Bhakti Charu Swami left his home and joined ISKCON in Sridham Mayapur. His first encounter with Srila Prabhupada occurred in January 1977 when he was given the task of translating all of Prabhupada's books into Bengali. From that point forward, he became a member of Prabhupada's entourage and was appointed as ISKCON's secretary for Indian affairs. During the Gaura Purnima festival of 1977 in Mayapur, he received both first and second initiation. Shortly after, during the Snana Yatra festival in Vrindavan, Srila Prabhupada bestowed upon him the sannyasa order.
For over 35 years, Bhakti Charu Swami has been traveling and spreading the message of devotion, gathering disciples worldwide. He dedicated himself to the completion of Srila Prabhupada's book translations, which concluded in 1996 on the occasion of Srila Prabhupada's centennial anniversary. Additionally, he played a significant role in the creation, writing, production, and direction of the monumental biographical video series called "Abhay Charan." This acclaimed series, comprising over 100 episodes, aired on Indian National television, offering a comprehensive account of Srila Prabhupada's life and accomplishments. Bhakti Charu Swami also spearheaded a remarkable project in Ujjain, overseeing the construction of an extraordinary marble temple within a record-breaking span of 10 months. Serving as the GBC for this region, he continues to supervise the development of the Ujjain temple. Furthermore, under his guidance, a program was initiated to provide daily meals to more than 20,000 school children in Ujjain, with plans for future expansion. Additionally, he established an altar making department in Ujjain, which produces intricately designed altars for devotees and ISKCON temples worldwide.
Bhakti Charu Swami enriches and inspires devotees globally with his profound knowledge of scriptures, melodious devotional bhajans, and unwavering devotion to Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON.
